Our Story

Mark Pennell has been in the water since the late 1960s, starting out with homemade Hawaiian slings before building his own wooden spearguns. Through decades of diving and designing, one thing has stayed constant — his passion for the hunt and his eye for quality gear that does the job.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In the 1990s, as the spearfishing world shifted towards mass-produced commercial gear, Mark tried pretty much everything on the market. None of it measured up to what he wanted out of a speargun. The feel was off and the performance was a bit all over the show. That’s when he decided to return to handcrafting his own spearguns, the way they were meant to be made: simple, strong, accurate, and beautiful.

Born out of frustration and fuelled by experience, Kingi Spearguns offers serious spearos a top-tier gun without the inflated price tag. Crafted from sustainably sourced African teak, every speargun is hand-shaped and tested in the ocean before it leaves the workshop. Each one is unique, just like the people who use them.

Mark named the gun after his favourite catch: the mighty kingfish, or kingi. Fast, powerful, and sharp, it’s a fitting name for a speargun built for speed and acccuracy.

A former competition spearo, Mark now dives to feed the family, and they return the favour. His wife, Stella, one of their daughters, Tash, and two sons-in-law, Pati and Michael, are all spearfishers too. (And he's patiently waiting until his grandsons are old enough to hold a speargun- he's got a "Prince" idea floating around- specially made for juniors).

Spearfishing is more than a hobby — it’s a way of life. And Kingi Spearguns is built on that legacy.
